Rachel K.M. Lutz

Rachel Lutz practises primarily in the areas of civil litigation, family law and criminal defence. She is committed to helping clients understand the legal process through clear communication, thoughtful advice, and practical solutions tailored to their circumstances.

Raised in Wolfville, Rachel returned to Nova Scotia in 2020 after living in Newfoundland and Ontario. Before entering private practice, she worked with newcomers, youth, and underserved communities through organizations including L’Arche, the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Community College, and Wagmatcook First Nation.

Rachel holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy from Memorial University of Newfoundland, a Bachelor of Education and Juris Doctor from Queen’s University, and a Master of Education in Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning Studies from Memorial University.

Rachel’s background in education shapes her approach to legal practice. She believes clients make the best decisions when they fully understand their rights, their options, and the legal process. She takes pride in explaining complex legal issues in a clear, approachable manner while providing practical and compassionate representation.

ARTICLING STUDENTS

Bluenose Law is committed to supporting articling students on their journey to becoming lawyers. Each year, we welcome students to gain hands-on experience, develop their skills, and grow within our firm. Many have continued their careers with us as junior associates.

At Bluenose Law, our Articling Program provides students with hands-on experience across major areas of law. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to explore their interests while receiving support to refine their skills. Our open-door policy fosters a collaborative environment where senior associates and partners offer guidance every step of the way.

Articling Students (for positions commencing summer 2025)

Bluenose Law is now accepting applications for our 2025-2026 articling positions. Please submit your completed application to Ying Fraswer at yfraser@bluenoselaw.ca by May 30, 2025. Applications should include a resume, cover letter, and transcripts from your law school and undergraduate (and graduate, if applicable) studies. As per the Law Society of Nova Scotia’s guidelines, the recruitment period will begin on June 3, 2025.

Dustin A. Patzer

Dustin is an experienced family lawyer who has spent more than a decade helping clients navigate separation, parenting disputes, child and spousal support, and property issues. He believes that negotiated resolutions are often the best outcome for families, but when settlement is not possible, he is a determined and effective courtroom advocate.

Originally from Southern Alberta, Dustin competed at a high level in football, winning a National Championship with Team Alberta before going on to play in the Canadian Junior Football League. The discipline, preparation, and resilience he developed through competitive athletics continue to shape his approach to advocacy and client service. Dustin has now relocated to Nova Scotia to raise his son and build his practice on the South Shore. His experience as a parent has deepened his appreciation for the challenges families face during periods of transition and informs his practical, client-centred approach to family law.

Dustin has appeared before courts at every level in Alberta and continues to build on that experience in Nova Scotia. Clients appreciate his calm, straightforward advice, careful preparation, and commitment to achieving practical solutions that protect what matters most.
